Does liability insurance provide coverage for the entire family?

With liability insurance , not only are you yourself, but other members of your family are also insured in the event of a claim. Especially with children, it can be nice to be properly insured in case of damage. Children are boisterous and accidents can happen at any time. With liability insurance your whole family is insured in case of damage.

The amount of the premium depends in part on the family composition. For example, a single person without children pays less for their liability insurance than a family with children. This is because for an insurer it is more likely than they have to pay out compensation. But who are all covered by liability insurance?

Who is covered within a household?

No one expects to need liability insurance. Yet there are countless examples of minor accidents in which liability insurance would come in handy for your family. For example, if you spill a glass of red wine all over a friend's carpet. Or if your child crashes his bicycle into the neighbor's parked car. Or even if your dog jumps a little too enthusiastically on your parents' couch.

If you purchase liability insurance with family coverage for your family, you are not only insured yourself, but also:

  • Your partner
  • Resident children
  • Children living away from home (due to study) up to 27 years of age
  • Resident parents, parents-in-law or grandparents
  • Lodges
  • Pets

Up to what age are children co-insured?

Many insurance policies have a maximum age at which children are co-insured. Often this is up to age 27. If your children are living away from home for study, they are still co-insured. Are they no longer living at home, but not because of a study? Then they must take out their own liability insurance. The family coverage also includes damage to third parties caused by any lodgers. Unfortunately, if your lodgers cause damage to your own belongings, this will not be reimbursed.

Children under 14 are not held responsible for the damage they cause. Even if it is clear that they are at fault for the damage. This is because it is assumed that children up to 14 are not yet old enough to oversee the consequences of their actions. From the age of 14, your child is still covered under the policy, but intentional damages are less easily reimbursed. Your child is then expected to be old enough to take more responsibility.
