Children co-insured on liability insurance
Children are sometimes rambunctious and so it can happen that something precious is unintentionally destroyed. With liability insurance, you can avoid incurring unnecessary expenses. When you purchase liability insurance with family coverage, your children are co-insured up to a certain age. Exactly how long depends on your insurer's terms and conditions.
What is third-party insurance?
Third-party insurance and liability insurance are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. TPL means Third Party Liability and is found in motor vehicle insurance, which is mandatory if you own a vehicle. Liability insurance (AVP) provides coverage if you cause damage to someone else. Unlike third-party insurance, liability insurance is not required by law. However, it is recommended that you purchase this insurance to protect your financial situation. Liability insurance premiums are usually relatively low.
Children's liability insurance coverage
Liability insurance covers almost all damages caused to third parties, the policyholder and family members who are co-insured. That includes children and even your pets. For example: your child accidentally knocks over Grandma's expensive vase and it is in 1001 pieces. Or your child accidentally kicks a ball through the neighbor's window during a game of soccer. In both cases, you are covered through liability insurance when you have family coverage.
In addition to material damage, you are also insured for personal injury, for example if your child causes a broken arm to a fellow player while playing sports. In many cases, borrowed items are covered under the supervision clause, except in the case of inherent vice.
When no children's liability insurance coverage?
There are situations where damages caused by children are not covered:
Damage by intent
For damage caused intentionally, liability insurance does not provide coverage. Think of vandalism, arson or joyriding. If children are younger than 14, the parents are liable and the insurance usually does pay out.
Damage to property within the family
Damage to belongings of parents or other persons on the same policy is not covered.
Damage caused by motor vehicles
Damage caused by a car or other motor vehicle is not covered by liability insurance. For that, third-party insurance is mandatory.
Damage to rented or borrowed items
Damage to rented items is excluded. For borrowed items, coverage can sometimes apply through the so-called supervision clause, but this varies by insurer. Moreover, there is no coverage if it breaks down due to normal use or inherent defect.
Parents liable up to 14 years of age
Children up to the age of 14 are not held responsible, even if it is clear that they are at fault for the damage. The reason for this is that it is assumed that children up to age 14 cannot yet properly oversee the consequences of their actions. From the age of 14, this liability decreases and your child becomes more responsible. Your child will still be covered under your policy, but intentional damages are less easily reimbursed.
Until what age are my children co-insured?
As a parent, do you have liability insurance with family coverage? In most cases, your children are then co-insured until the age of 27. They must be living at home or studying away from home.
Some insurers have a limit of 23 instead of 27. Therefore, always check your policy conditions. When your child marries, stops studying or moves out of the house for some other reason, he or she must take out their own liability insurance. Also, when your child stops studying but continues to live in rooms, their own policy is necessary.
Premium and family composition
The amount of the premium is related to family composition. A single person without children pays less premium than a family with children because families are more likely to make claims.
Changes in your family
When there are changes in family composition (such as birth, divorce, cohabitation or when children move out), it is wise to review your liability insurance and adjust it if necessary.
