Parents' liability insurance: are the children co-insured?

As a parent, of course you are responsible for your children. You try to look after them the best you can, but kids are boisterous. If they are busy playing at a friend's house, they may accidentally knock something over or break it. And let that be that antique vase or expensive television. Ugh, expensive joke. If you take out liability insurance with family coverage, children are usually covered. We tell you more about it!

Up to what age are children co-insured?

Children are co-insured with most insurers at age 27. Your child must live in your home. Does your child live in a room to study? Even then they are still co-insured on the family coverage of your liability insurance. Only when your child is older than 27, no longer lives at home for a reason other than study or marries, they must take out their own liability insurance. The maximum age until which your children are co-insured may vary from one insurer to another. Therefore, always check the policy conditions of your insurance policy.

Parents remain liable until children are 14 years old

Children under the age of 14 are not held responsible for damages they cause. This is because it is believed that children under that age cannot yet properly oversee the consequences of their actions. From the age of 14, your child is still covered by your liability insurance policy, but intentional damages are less likely to be reimbursed. Your child is then expected to be old enough to take more responsibility.

What is all covered?

Liability insurance covers damage you or someone else in your family causes to property or people. With family coverage, not only your own family is insured, but live-in parents, parents-in-law or grandparents, lodgers, staff and pets are also covered. So if your child rides a bike into the neighbor's car, you are insured, but also if your dog jumps a little too enthusiastically on the couch at your parents' house. This is both covered by liability insurance with family coverage.

In addition to property damage, you are also insured for personal injury. This means you are also covered if your child accidentally causes bodily injury to someone, such as while playing sports.

When is there no coverage?

There are some exceptions in which liability insurance will not cover your children. An insurer will not pay compensation in the following situations:

  • In case of intent. For example, damage caused by vandalism, arson or joyriding. If the children are under 14, the parents are liable and liability insurance usually pays out.
  • For damage to the property of persons on the same policy, such as father and mother.
