Mobility scooter insurance coverage; what coverages are there?
If you purchased a mobility scooter, you are required to purchase mobility scooter insurance as well. As with a car, you can choose from a variety of coverages. Below we explain which coverages are available.
What is mobility scooter insurance?
Before you can use a mobility scooter on the road, you need insurance. The moment your mobility scooter goes faster than 10km/h, you must be at least 16 years old. Does your mobility scooter go slower? Then there is no minimum age. With a WA mobility scooter insurance you are insured for damage you cause to others. This is the minimum coverage you need.

What coverages can I choose for my mobility scooter insurance?
Third-party insurance for your mobility scooter is a minimum requirement. This insures you against damage you cause yourself to the other party. Damage to your own scooter will not be paid for. Is the damage recoverable from the party causing the damage? In this case, you can try to hold the other party liable yourself. With third-party coverage, the insurer will not do this for you.
Would you like more comprehensive coverage, which also covers the costs to your own mobility scooter in the event of damage? Then you can choose an All-risk coverage for your mobility scooter. With a WA-casco (all-risk) coverage you are also insured for theft, collision (including own fault), damage, joyriding or vandalism. In case of damage caused by an accident, for example, the insurer will reimburse the repair costs. Even if the damage is caused by the other party. The insurer will then recover the damage from the other party. If your mobility scooter is too badly damaged you will be paid an amount. This amount depends on the current market value of your mobility scooter.
What coverage should I choose?
Now that you know what coverages are available for your mobility scooter, you may be wondering which one to choose. The choice of coverage depends on your personal situation and needs. Third-party insurance is often chosen for older mobility scooters with very little value left. This is also the cheapest form of insurance. Costs range from a few tens to just over a hundred euros for a year. Read more about mobility scooter insurance premiums here .
However, a mobility scooter with a value of a few thousand euros is not exclusively insured against legal liability. In case of an accident caused by you, this coverage will not pay for the damage to your mobility scooter. In that case, you choose the all-risk coverage.
Insurance mobility scooter required?
A mobility scooter does not have a license plate, like a moped or car, but still falls under the Motor Vehicle Liability Act (WAM). This means that for your mobility scooter you need at least a third-party insurance. After taking out your mobility scooter insurance, you will receive an insurance plate that you must mount on the back of your mobility scooter.
Additional insurance scooter: recourse legal assistance
When you take out mobility scooter insurance, you can additionally insure yourself for recourse legal assistance. With this coverage, in the event of an accident, the damage and additional costs of the damage resulting from the accident will be recovered from the other party if they are liable.
