Everything You Need to Know About Insurance for Vehicles for People with Disabilities
Anyone who has a wheelchair-accessible vehicle registered in their name is required to purchase wheelchair-accessible vehicle insurance. In most cases, the cost of this insurance is reasonable. You can choose between two types of insurance, each with significantly different coverage.
Very few insurers offer insurance for vehicles adapted for people with disabilities. To save you a long search, we’ve already looked into where you’re best off going and have settled on the insurer Klaverblad. This insurer offers competitive rates and is quick to provide the insurance documents.
Which wheelchair insurance policy should I choose?
You can choose between two different coverage options:
- Liability Insurance. This provides coverage only for damage to others for which you are responsible. For example, if you hit a pedestrian.
- Liability + Comprehensive. In addition to coverage for legal liability, you’ll now also receive a payout if your wheelchair-accessible vehicle is damaged. If your vehicle is beyond repair, you’ll receive the current market value.
When should you choose third-party liability insurance for a vehicle for people with disabilities?
This insurance is the most logical choice for a low-value vehicle for people with disabilities. The term “low value” is a relative concept in this context. You should not purchase comprehensive insurance for a vehicle for people with disabilities that has a short remaining useful life. In that case, the premium would be too high compared to the vehicle’s value.
When should you choose third-party liability insurance for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle?
For example, third-party liability insurance for mobility vehicles provides coverage in the event of theft, fire damage, and accidents. This coverage is the most logical choice for a new mobility vehicle. However, this insurance may still be the best choice even for older mobility vehicles. When comparing insurance policies, you can generally use this coverage as your baseline. If the premium turns out to be too high compared to the current market value, you can still opt for third-party liability insurance for mobility vehicles. Keep in mind, however, that the coverage under this type of insurance is much more limited.
When am I covered?
Unlike most other types of insurance, you must purchase this insurance by May 1 of each year. Your vehicle insurance coverage always runs from May 1 to May 1 of the following year. If you do not purchase the insurance by May 1, the premium will be calculated on a pro rata basis. This means the premium covers the period from the policy’s effective date until May 1.
When you purchase insurance online, your coverage does not take effect immediately. This means you are not yet allowed to drive the vehicle. After the insurer approves your application, you will receive the insurance sticker by mail. Once you have received it and affixed it to the vehicle, you may drive the vehicle on public roads.
Some factors that affect the amount of your premium

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance for Vehicles for People with Disabilities
What is third-party liability insurance?
This is the basic coverage and the most affordable insurance for mobility scooters. It covers damage you cause to third parties with your mobility scooter, but not damage to your own mobility scooter.
You save money by choosing third-party liability coverage, but in the event of damage, this choice could backfire. That’s because the insurer only covers damage caused to others. Suppose you cause a collision with another car while driving your wheelchair-accessible vehicle. The damage to your car totals €2,500. Your insurer will cover the damage to the other party. You will not receive any payment for the damage to your own vehicle. You will therefore have to pay the €2,500 in damages yourself. If the other party is liable for the damage, you can seek reimbursement from them.
What is comprehensive (all-risk) coverage?
This is the most comprehensive coverage available for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle insurance policy. In addition to liability coverage, damage to your own wheelchair-accessible vehicle is now also covered in the event of, among other things, fire, theft, storms, collisions, and broken windows.
How long is the term of disability auto insurance?
Disability car insurance always runs through May 1 of the following year. For example, if you purchase a policy on June 1, the coverage will run from June 1 through May 1 of the following year. After that, the insurance company will renew the policy for one year at a time.
Is there a deductible for disability car insurance?
Yes, there may be a deductible with disability car insurance. The deductible is the portion of the costs that you must pay yourself when you file a claim. The deductible is usually a fixed amount that you must pay yourself, regardless of the damage you’ve sustained, and applies to comprehensive coverage. The deductible varies by insurer, and it’s important to carefully read the terms and conditions of your policy before purchasing insurance.
Can I drive right away after applying for disability car insurance?
By law, you are required to have at least third-party liability insurance for your wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
You can get an insurance quote and purchase a policy directly through our website. However, you may not drive the wheelchair-accessible vehicle on the road immediately after applying for insurance. First, you must affix an insurance plate or sticker to your vehicle. You will receive these from the insurer once your application has been approved and the policy has been issued. They will be mailed to you.
Are other people allowed to drive my wheelchair-accessible vehicle?
When you apply for insurance, you must specify the driver. If someone else was driving at the time of the accident, this may affect the insurance payout. The insurer will assess this on a case-by-case basis.
When you sell your accessible vehicle to someone else, that person is not allowed to drive it using your insurance plate. The person who buys the accessible vehicle must apply for a new insurance policy themselves.
Why do I pay annually for disability car insurance?
Insurance policies for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle run from May to May. This means you always purchase the policy for that entire period. You pay the premium annually.
If the insurance doesn't take effect until October, it will continue through May of the following year.
If you cancel the insurance within the year, you will, of course, receive a refund for the excess premium you paid.
Will I get a refund for the premium I paid in advance if I cancel the insurance within a year?
If the insurance policy is canceled within the year, you will receive a refund for the excess premium paid.
How can I cancel the insurance on my wheelchair-accessible vehicle?
When you insure a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, you’ll receive an insurance tag or sticker. You’re only allowed to drive on the road with it. If you sell the wheelchair-accessible vehicle, the insurance tag or sticker must be returned to the insurer. You can send it directly to them or through us. Once the insurer has received the insurance tag, the insurance policy can be canceled.
