MOT for mopeds and motorcycles
The Bovag is calling for a compulsory MOT test for mopeds and motor-assisted bicycles. This is intended to counteract the nuisance caused by souped-up mopeds and motor-assisted bicycles. The problem is not new, but the popularity of these forms of transport is increasing the nuisance.
How to combat souped-up mopeds and microcars? The government and the Bovag are at a loss. The measures taken so far do not work. With 1.2 million vehicles, it is necessary to take action against souped-up vehicles.
An MOT test discourages having a souped-up bike
The problem can be tackled by the obligation to periodically inspect the vehicles. It is nowadays very easy to remove speed limiters. The owners who cannot or do not want to do it themselves go to a local scooter company. Don't they want to do it? Probably another company would like to do it. You can find manuals on the internet to do it yourself. An MOT test discourages boosting. For the test the vehicle has to be original again.
In case of speeding, the WOK status is imposed
The current way of tackling the problem is too mild. In case of speeding, the two-wheelers are temporarily given WOK status. The abbreviation stands for Waiting for Inspection. This means that the registration certificate is invalid until it turns out that the moped or semi-moped again meets the requirements. The costs of the inspection are to be borne by the owner of the bicycle.
Is the moped or motor cycle with a WOK status insured?
The registration number is temporarily invalid. This means that the vehicle is not insured. The driver is even liable to punishment if the vehicle is driven anyway. Only when the status is removed again, the insurer offers coverage again. In case an accident is caused when there is no valid moped or scooter insurance on the vehicle, the consequences can be huge. The insurer of the motor vehicle may even recover any damages from the insured. In case of an accident with injury or death, the damage costs can be high.
What is the danger of souped-up mopeds and motorcycles?
The nuisance occurs mainly in urban areas. The busy traffic, combined with speeding motorcycles, causes danger. The danger is further increased by the fact that they also ride on the cycle track. This endangers cyclists and motorists are not prepared for the fact that such fast vehicles can come from the bicycle path.
Such a compulsory inspection is one of the options for counteracting the nuisance. The PvdA advocates the criminal prosecution of the companies that boost the vehicles. It will only be a matter of time before measures are taken to counteract the current unsafe conditions.
