What does a third-party moped insurance policy cover?
Have you recently purchased a moped and are now looking for insurance? Then terms like third-party, third-party + theft and fire (limited casco) and third-party + theft, fire and collision (all-risk or full casco) are probably flying around your ears. But what exactly do they mean? Let's start with third-party liability. TPL stands for Third Party Liability. With a TPL moped insurance, you are insured for damage you cause to another person with your moped. On Alpina.nl , we tell you why third-party insurance is mandatory and when it is a wise choice.
Third-party coverage required
In the Netherlands, you are required to have at least third-party insurance for every motor vehicle. This also applies to a moped. Without insurance, your moped is not allowed on public roads. A WA moped insurance covers liability damages. If you crash your moped into a car and cause damage, you are insured. The insurer will compensate the other party for the damage. After an accident, in which one or more persons are injured, the costs can even run into the thousands of euros. To prevent you from being unable to pay this and thus the victims from receiving financial compensation, moped insurance is mandatory. This does not cover damage to your own moped. For this, you must take out more comprehensive coverage.
Is third-party coverage a wise choice?
You may be tempted to go straight for the cheapest moped insurance. After all, it's all expensive enough as it is. However, it is wise to take a good look at your moped first. Third-party moped insurance has limited coverage and is therefore mostly chosen for older mopeds with a low daily value. If your moped has a low daily value, it does not pay to take out a comprehensive third-party liability + theft, fire and collision (All-risk) insurance. A WA moped insurance is then a good choice. If you have a very new or expensive moped, the coverage of a third-party insurance is too limited. Damage to your own moped will not be compensated and for a moped with a high daily value, this can add up. For a moped with a high daily value, it is better to have a more extensive insurance.
Coverages
Besides the mandatory third-party coverage for your moped insurance, you can also choose WA + Theft and Fire or WA + Theft, Fire and Collision (also called All-risk). When choosing the right coverage, you can look at the daily value of your moped.
Third party liability + Theft and Fire
The WA + Theft and Fire is slightly more extensive than the basic WA insurance. You are also insured for damage to your own moped by theft or fire. If you take out this coverage, the insurer often sets a number of conditions. They expect you to take a number of precautions to prevent theft. For example, you must have the proper locks and you must always lock the moped. If you leave the moped unattended and unlocked and it is stolen, there is a chance that the insurer will not pay out.
WA + Theft, Fire and Collision (All-risk)
The most comprehensive coverage is the third-party coverage + Theft, Fire and Collision. With this coverage you are not only insured for all previously mentioned damages, but also for damage to your own moped due to your own fault. For All-risk moped insurance, you pay the highest premium. Therefore, this insurance is usually only taken out for mopeds that are new and still have significant value.
