Motorcycle insurance for novice drivers, what should you pay attention to?
You want to get or have just gotten your motorcycle license. Buying a motorcycle is a logical second step, but have you thought about motorcycle insurance and what to look out for? In the Netherlands there are about 750 thousand motorcycles on the road. So you are certainly not the only one who has had questions about matching insurance. What should you pay attention to as a beginning driver of a motorcycle and what is a good motorcycle insurance? That is explained in this handy article on motorcycle insurance for the novice driver.
Getting motorcycle insurance as a novice driver
A motorcycle license consists of three different classes. Depending on your age and the class of motorcycle, you can get a license and ride a motorcycle. This mainly applies to young drivers, as they are not allowed to ride every class of motorcycle. The three different classes are:
- Light motorcycle, A1 driver's license;
- Medium motorcycle, A2 driver's license;
- Heavy motorcycle, driver's license A.
Driving license A allows you to ride all different motorcycles, but not vice versa. It is wise to check this before purchasing motorcycle insurance. This is because the premium may be different for each class.
Different coverages for your motorcycle novice driver
A motorcycle, like all other motorized vehicles allowed on Dutch roads, must have at least third-party insurance. However, there are more extensive coverages than the WA insurance alone. WA insurance is the least comprehensive insurance. In addition, you have a choice of: WA Beperkt Casco and Allrisk coverage. The WA Limited Comprehensive insurance also covers Theft and Fire damage and the All-risk insurance also covers damage you cause to your own motorcycle.
Depending on your needs, you can purchase coverage. It is also a good idea to weigh up the value and age of the motorcycle you have. With a motorcycle that is 12 years old, the cost of All-risk insurance probably does not outweigh what you will be paid out in the event of damage. This is different with a brand new motorcycle.
Damage-free years and the amount of motor insurance for novice driver
As with car insurance, you can also build up claim-free years with motorcycle insurance. As a novice driver, you do not yet have claim-free years, but you can build them up. If you are no longer a novice driver, the number of claim-free years can provide a substantial discount on your insurance. In this way you will get a cheaper and cheaper motorcycle insurance.
New value motor insurance policy for novice driver
If you have bought a new motorcycle and you are going to take out motorcycle insurance, you can also choose the new value policy. With the new value scheme, most insurers allow you to insure your motorcycle for the new value for three years. You can take out this plan for all three coverages.
