How do I cancel my motorcycle insurance?
A motorcycle insurance policy is a contract between you and an insurer. When you purchase motorcycle insurance, you both sign a contract that sets forth the rights and obligations of both parties. Both you and the insurer are obligated to abide by these rules. Of course, you may want to cancel your motorcycle insurance at some point. You can, but not at any time. Canceling motorcycle insurance can be done at 3 times, which we will explain for you here on Alpina.nl
Cancel motorcycle insurance by contract expiration date
Every insurance contract has a contract expiration date. This is listed on your policy schedule. Most insurance companies use a notice period of two or three months. You can find the exact term in the policy conditions of your insurance policy.
Cancel motorcycle insurance when terms and conditions change or premium increases
Insurers are allowed to increase premiums or change terms and conditions in the interim. Does your insurer do this and does it negatively affect your motorcycle insurance? Then you have 30 days to cancel the policy. Is your premium increased after damage or a change to your policy? Then you cannot simply cancel the insurance policy. It must be an increase in premium or a change that applies to everyone with a current motorcycle insurance policy with that insurer.
Canceling motorcycle insurance when you sell your motorcycle
Finally, you can cancel your motorcycle insurance (mid-term) when you have sold your motorcycle. This can be done after the motorcycle's registration number has been transferred to the new owner's name. The new owner must then ensure that the motorcycle is insured. When selling a vehicle, there is no notice period. For this you need to contact your insurer yourself. The road tax does stop automatically the moment the license plate is no longer in your name. If you have purchased a new motorcycle, you can have the policy adjusted based on your new motorcycle.
Winter break coverage
Some insurance companies have winter break coverage. Many motorcyclists do not ride during the winter. After all, motorcycling is more fun when it's dry and the sun is shining than when it's raining or snowing. Moreover, motorcycle accidents happen more often in winter, for example because it is slippery. If you don't ride in the winter, it means you can't cause accidents either. This reduces the risk for your insurer. That means you get a discount on the premium. The winter break usually applies from December 15 to March 1. Damage caused by fire or theft in the garage is still covered as normal.
Canceling motorcycle insurance? Read the policy conditions carefully!
An insurer itself determines the conditions of insurance. It can therefore happen that one insurer has different conditions for cancellation than another. This can even differ per insurance. That is why it is important that before you take out a motorcycle insurance policy, you carefully read the policy conditions. The policy conditions contain all the conditions that apply to your motorcycle insurance. Also the conditions with regard to cancellation are laid down there.
