How can you save money by de-registering your RV?

A motorhome is both a means of transportation and a place to stay. When you go on vacation in your motorhome, you essentially have your vacation home with you. That gives you an incredible sense of freedom, even once you’ve arrived at your destination. However, you’re probably one of the many motorhome owners who only use their motorhome for a small part of the year. It’s naturally used the most in the summer, and sometimes it’s taken out of storage in the spring and fall as well. Isn’t it a shame to pay road tax all year long when you’re not using your RV for the rest of the year? So be smart, and start de-registering your RV annually.

What does it mean to suspend a motorhome?

If you choose to suspend your motorhome’s registration, the registration’s validity will be suspended. In practical terms, this means you are no longer allowed to drive your motorhome on public roads. The advantage for you is that, during the suspension period, your motorhome does not need to be covered by liability insurance, you do not have to pay road tax, and it does not need to undergo a vehicle inspection. As you can imagine, this can save you a significant amount of money. However, it is important that you carefully follow and comply with the applicable rules.

Suspend the deadline

If you decide to suspend your RV registration, there are a number of rules you need to keep in mind. In principle, you suspend your RV registration for an entire year. The suspension takes effect on the day you indicate that you wish to suspend your RV registration. If you truly want to save on the aforementioned expenses, make sure that the suspension of your RV lasts at least one month. If you lift the suspension within a month, you’ll still have to pay road tax for that period. The Tax Authority will send you a back-payment notice, which means the suspension won’t have served much purpose.

Extend the suspension period for a motorhome

Of course, there may be times when you don’t use your RV for an entire year. Perhaps you don’t have any vacation plans, or maybe there are other reasons why you’re storing your RV. In that case, remember that you must extend the one-year suspension period before it expires. Since 2019, you’ve also had the option to suspend your motorhome’s registration for two or three years at once. But keep in mind that you are not allowed to drive on public roads at all during this entire period.

Public road = broad concept

The term “public road” is broader than many people realize. It also includes paths and shoulders, the sides of roads, and parking lots and parking garages, provided they are open to the public.

Suspension Fees

If your RV is less than 15 years old, you’ll pay €73.10. For all other RVs, the fee is €24.10. Would you like to extend the suspension of your RV? That also costs €24.10. These are the 2020 rates. If you decide to lift the suspension of your RV, you won’t have to pay anything extra. Please note: If you’ve already received a payment slip by the time you suspend your RV, simply pay it as usual. The Tax Authority will promptly refund any overpaid road tax.

Suspend Camper Liability Insurance

We already mentioned that your RV does not need to be covered by liability insurance during the suspension period. That sounds like an attractive benefit. However, it’s wise to check in advance how this is handled by your RV insurance provider. Many insurance companies already take the recreational—and therefore temporary—use of RVs into account when determining their premiums. Are you planning to purchase a new insurance policy for your RV? If so, be sure to compare the different insurers on this point as well.

Quickly Suspend Your RV

You can suspend your RV’s registration quickly and in two ways. You can choose to go to a post office. However, this is only possible at a few larger post offices and at the service counters of the three RDW offices in Zoetermeer, Den Bosch, and Veendam. To do so, you’ll need to bring the registration certificate (Part 1B) and the transfer certificate (also known as Part II) from your vehicle registration document. Be sure to have a valid form of identification with you as well.
Of course, you can make things easier for yourself and suspend your camper’s registration online. You can do this on the RDW website. The suspension takes effect immediately, and you’ll receive confirmation by mail within a few days.

Other Camper Insurance Policies

Earlier, we discussed liability insurance, which covers you for any legal liability. But of course, you’ve also insured your RV for other risks. It goes without saying that you should simply keep these insurance policies in force. After all, your RV is still at risk of being stolen or damaged even (or especially) when you’re not using it. You wouldn’t want to even think about canceling your insurance, only to have something unpleasant happen during that very period, resulting in a significant financial setback, would you?

More information on vehicle tax

We can imagine that you may be wondering exactly how suspensions and the payment of vehicle tax work. For more specific information, please visit the Tax and Customs Administration’s website.

Lift the suspension on the RV

You can also easily lift the suspension of your RV online. You will need your DigiD to do this. You can end the suspension on the RDW website. Please note: you cannot specify the date for ending the suspension in advance. When you are ready to end the suspension, you must report this online. The suspension will then end immediately.

Suspension and Sale

Suppose you sell your RV while it is in storage and has been de-registered by you. In that case, you do not need to cancel the de-registration. As soon as the RV is registered in the new owner’s name, the de-registration is canceled immediately.

Suspending a Camper's Registration with the RDW

You can suspend your RV on the RDW website. Follow these steps to suspend your RV online:

  1. Go to“Request or Extend a Suspension”and log in with your DigiD. You will then be redirected to the RDW service
  2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend
  3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle: 1, 2, or 3 years
  4. Pay the fees via iDEAL

You will then receive a confirmation email. The camper’s license plate will not be suspended until you receive a second email from the RDW. This email will also include the expiration date of the suspension. Be sure to keep this email in a safe place; it serves as your proof of suspension.

What about my claim-free years?

During the time you had your RV insurance, you naturally accumulatedclaim-free years. These years are not simply lost when the insurance policy ends. They usually remainvalid for 3 years. You must thereforetake out a new RV insurance policy within those three years; otherwise, they will expire. Some insurers even apply a shorter period. So keep this in mind and check the policy terms and conditions in advance.

Can I suspend my RV insurance?

Unfortunately, most insurers do not allow you to suspend your RV insurance. A few do, however. A common condition for suspension is that the RV has been totaled or sold. If you suspend the RV, suspension of the policy is therefore usually not possible. This is because many insurers already take into account the recreational—and therefore temporary—use of the RV when determining the premium. As a result, the premium for RV insurance is often lower than for standard auto insurance. If you cannot suspend your RV insurance with your insurer, it might still be worth canceling the policy.
