What does a third-party motorhome insurance policy cover?
As an RV owner, you are required to have insurance on your vehicle. The obligation applies to third-party liability (TPL) insurance. Of the three forms of insurance offered by most insurers, this is the cheapest motorhome insurance. The amount of the premium is the biggest advantage, but this insurance also has disadvantages.
Due to an accident, the financial damage can be great. So great even that you cannot possibly bear the burden yourself. This is why third-party insurance is mandatory. A victim of an accident with an RV can file a claim directly with the insurer where the liable party is insured.
When does WA motorhome insurance pay out?
The insurance company pays out the damage caused by the motorhome to others. The damage may be just a few hundred or a few thousand euros, but it can also be much higher. In a serious accident with several injured people, the damages can run into millions of euros. It is not for nothing that the insurer's insured amount for personal injury is €6,070,000. For property damage, the maximum payment is €2,500,000. The likelihood of such damages is small, but it cannot be ruled out.
What about the damage to your RV?
TPL insurance does not pay out for your own damages. If your damage was caused by someone else, you can recover the claim amount from the person responsible for your damage. The insurer will not help you with that. Also damages like broken windows and storm damage are not covered by the insurance. These kinds of damages are insured in the limited liability insurance. The all risk motor home insurance also pays for the damage to your motor home in case of such damage. The all-risk policy also pays for damages in case of an accident caused by you. Of course, the premium for these policies is also higher.
Is third-party insurance the best choice?
TPL is the cheapest insurance, but also the most stripped down. For an RV of only limited value, third-party insurance is often the best choice. For new RVs and old RVs with still a high value, the all risk is the smartest choice. The intermediate form is the WA limited casco. But there is no clear boundary between these forms of insurance. As soon as your camper is five years old, for example, you don't have to exchange the all-risk for the cheaper WA limited casco.
It remains a matter of comparing well. Contrast the premium with the coverage and make your choice based on that. It is better not to skimp on coverage. Compare insurers and get the savings from this.
