How do I insure my vintage car against fire?
The owner of a vintage car is required to carry third-party liability (TPL) insurance on the vehicle. But this insurance does not provide coverage against damage caused by fire. You can, however, include damage due to fire in the more comprehensive vintage car insurance policies.
Owners of vintage cars tend to be more economical with the car compared to other car owners. So it makes sense that you make sure you have vintage car insurance with the right coverage. There are three forms of insurance you can choose between. Two of these insurance forms provide coverage against damage caused by fire.
Which insurance is the best choice for vintage cars?
Insurance is not a one-size-fits-all product. It should be customized insurance. Third-party insurance only covers damage caused by the car to others. In case of fire damage to your vintage car, you will therefore not be paid anything. The more extensive WA + limited casco and the WA + full casco do cover this cause of damage. Below is a description of the coverage in these insurance types:
- WA + limited casco - In addition to third-party liability damage, the insurer also pays for theft, storm and hail damage, collision with stray animals and broken windows, among other things;
- WA + full casco - The most important addition compared to the WA limited casco is compensation for damage caused by a collision. In the event of an accident, you will therefore also be paid for the damage to your vintage car by your own insurer.
Is damage from fire a real risk?
A car can catch fire from problems under the hood, as well as from arson or a fire in the garage where the car is parked. It is not very likely that your car will be damaged in this way, but you take out the insurance because there is a chance anyway. The need for such insurance is also partly determined by the value of the vintage car. With a car of only a small value, you can take a chance, but with more expensive cars, vintage car insurance with coverage against fire is recommended.
What will you receive in the event of fire damage?
Fire often does not involve minor damage. In fact, there is a good chance that the vintage car is beyond repair after a fire. In that case, the insured value is paid out. When insuring a vintage car, it is generally about the appraised value. When taking out the insurance, you will have the vintage car appraised to determine the value. Then you periodically have the value reassessed by an expert.
The difference in premium between third-party and third-party + limited collision insurance is often manageable. When comparing on Alpina.nl you can easily see the difference between the two coverages. With a small difference, you obviously prefer to choose the more extensive WA + limited casco than the WA old-timer insurance.
