Home Quad Insurance What Driver's License

What kind of driver's license do you need to ride a quad bike?

Quads come in many shapes and sizes. Depending on the model, you may need different driver’s licenses. Which driver’s license do you need for which quad?

You are required to purchase quad insurance for a quad. A condition for insurance coverage is that the driver is authorized to operate the quad. This sometimes requires additional research, because while you can drive some quads with a moped license, others require a Class B driver’s license or, in some cases, even a Class C license. Make sure to check this before you start riding the quad. Otherwise, you risk getting a ticket, but in the event of an accident, you’ll face an even bigger problem. That’s because quad insurance won’t pay out if the driver wasn’t authorized to drive at the time of the accident.

ATV driver's license

A quad bike is considered equivalent to a moped

Of course, you need a moped license to drive a quad like this. In addition, the requirements for the license apply. This means the driver must be at least 16 years old. Wearing a helmet is mandatory when driving the quad.

A three-wheeled ATV. What kind of driver's license do you need?

According to the Dutch government's website, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a Class B driver's license to operate this ATV. The vehicle must have a license plate, but this requirement also applies to other ATVs.

Your ATV is registered as a car

If the vehicle is classified as a passenger car, the standard requirements for a car also apply. This means you must have a Class B driver’s license and must wear a seat belt while driving. The minimum age for operating this quad is 18 years.

A quad bike can also be used as a company vehicle

The same requirements apply to this ATV as to a vehicle registered as a passenger car. However, there may be an additional requirement that you must hold a Class C driver's license.

What if the ATV hasn't been inspected for use on public roads?

There are also ATVs that you’re only allowed to use on private property, such as for working on farmland. These likely don’t have a license plate, so they’re not allowed on public roads. Don’t do that, because in the event of an accident, no insurance company will cover the costs.

Not all insurers offer quad insurance, but fortunately, there are several companies that do. By entering your license plate number and answering a few questions, you can compare multiple quad insurance policies on Alpina.nl.
