How to prevent theft of your scooter?
Scooters are very popular, especially among young people. Unfortunately, they are also in high demand by criminals. In the first half of 2016, 6380 scooters were stolen in the Netherlands alone. That's an average of 35 per day! Of the more than 6,000 scooters that were stolen, only 1,613 were recovered. So it is important to properly secure and insure your scooter. On this page, we give you tips on how to prevent theft of your scooter as best as possible.
Theft per scooter brand
The most popular scooters in 2016 among criminals are:
1. Piaggio: 1,983 units stolen. This is 1 in 92.
2. Peugeot: 710 units stolen. This is 1 in 180.
3. Tomos: 645 units stolen. This is 1 in 148.
4. Kymco: 443 units stolen. This is 1 in 207.
5. Sym: 358 units stolen. This is 1 in 224.
What can you do about theft?
To prevent theft, it is important to always park your scooter in a shed, garage or box, with at least two good locks and possibly an alarm system. Unfortunately there is not always the possibility to park your scooter inside. When you park your scooter outside, it is important to always lock your scooter somewhere, like a fence or a pole. Many scooters that are parked outside, are being loaded with the lock and all into a van. This goes fast, and thieves have enough time later to break the lock. By securing your scooter to a fence or post, you make it as difficult as possible for the thief.
Despite these measures, many scooters are stolen. After the theft, the scooters are often dismantled and the parts sold separately. It is possible to have a chip installed in all the loose parts of your scooter. These "tags" can be read by the police, so they can see if a scooter contains parts of a scooter that has been reported stolen. This way, the police can trace the thief faster.
What should you do if your scooter is stolen?
When your scooter is stolen, it is important to report it to the police. This can be done online, or at a police station. Always take the insurance certificate of your scooter with you. Then you have to report the insurance company that your scooter has been stolen. They will ask you for a copy of the official report and the proof of purchase of your locks, so that you can prove that it was locked properly. Always keep this in a safe place! Next, you have to contact the Insurance Bureau for Vehicle Crime (VbV) and report the theft. In some cases, the insurance company will do this for you.
Taking out scooter or moped insurance
If you take out only the mandatory third-party coverage for your scooter, you are not insured against theft. It is therefore advisable to take out at least a WA + Theft and Fire insurance for your scooter. You are then insured against theft, provided your scooter is locked with an ART category 3 approved lock. So you can leave your scooter with peace of mind.
