Scooter Lock Insurance
Thinking about getting scooter insurance? Be sure to pay close attention to the coverage you choose. Given the high theft rates, it’s a good idea to include theft coverage, especially for higher-value scooters. An ART-approved lock reduces the risk of theft and shows that your scooter is well-secured. But what exactly does this ART certification mean?
Standard lock is not sufficient
In most cases, a scooter or moped is equipped only with a standard lock. But this often doesn’t provide enough security. With this type of lock, thieves can still load the scooter onto a trailer because it isn’t secured to a pole or fence. This form of security is therefore generally insufficient, especially in large cities.
Insurers and Security Requirements
Most insurers impose a security requirement for moped or motorcycle insurance, particularly for third-party liability with theft coverage or comprehensive coverage. An ART lock is often required. The policy terms and conditions clearly specify which ART class is required, depending on the type of two-wheeler and the situation.
ART-approved lock
In addition to the standard lock, there are numerous options for providing your scooter or moped with better security. For example, you can choose from a U-lock, folding lock, chain lock, or disc brake lock to secure your scooter to a fixed object. These locks may carry an ART certification to help prevent scooter theft. With this certification, you can prove that your scooter is indeed equipped with a good lock. To reduce the risk of theft, insurers therefore require that you have at least a scooter lock with an ART certification mark.
Different security levels
The ART certification has various security levels, which are indicated by stars. The more stars a lock receives, the higher its security rating is considered to be.\
ART locks range from 2 to 5 stars:
2 stars:
usually suitable for bicycles
3 stars:
particularly suitable for mopeds and scooters
4 stars:
Suitable for motorcycles and sometimes required for mopeds on the road
5 stars:
has passed the most rigorous test and may be required by insurers when a motorcycle is stored at home
What is ART?
ART is a foundation dedicated to improving theft prevention for vehicles and boats. The foundation was established by a delegation from the ANWB and the RAI Association and achieves this, among other things, by certifying locks. The lock manufacturer almost always indicates whether the lock has an ART certification, but you can also verify this yourself on the ART Foundation’s website.
Proper Use of Lock Combinations
When you purchase a separate ART-approved padlock and a separate ART-approved chain, it is important to carefully check which lock combinations are permitted. Only the combinations listed on the packaging are approved. Using the wrong combination may mean that your lock is not considered ART-approved, which means you will not meet your insurer’s requirements.
Evidence and Keys in the Event of Theft
When purchasing a lock with the ART certification mark, it’s a good idea to keep the receipt so you can provide proof in the event of theft. It’s also important to have both the original keys and spare keys for the scooter on hand when reporting the theft to your insurance company, as the insurance company may ask for them.
