Blue license plate for cab
Cab vehicles are identified by blue license plates bearing black letters and numbers. Every cab operator is required by law to display them. There are rules:
- When the cab license plate should and should not be present on the vehicle;
- How to apply for the license plate;
- What to do if the vehicle is sold;
- For transportation across borders.
Exceptions
Since the introduction of the cab license plate, it has been unclear when it should or should not be present on the vehicle. The information sheet Taxi Badge and the Passenger Transport Act answers this question.
Request
You can apply for a cab license plate at the RDW Center for Vehicle Technology and Information (RDW). The vehicle must also be technically inspected. In addition to the inspection documents, the application for a cab license plate must be accompanied by:
A copy of a valid IVW operator's license
For the permit holder who is not the owner of the vehicle, a "joint use statement" must be completed. This can be requested from the RDW.
A copy of an extract from the Chamber of Commerce (not older than one year) showing the licensee's entrepreneurship.
The RDW tests the data for accuracy and completeness and then sends a written authorization per vehicle. This allows the license plate to be purchased from a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW. The RDW's site lists about 200 approved addresses.
When selling cab
When the vehicle is sold, the registration certificate part I should be adjusted at the RDW. The text 'cab' will then be removed from the document. After receiving the modified registration document, you must exchange the blue cab license plates for yellow ones at a plate supplier.
Transportation across the border
Transportation of passengers abroad is permitted. However, it is not allowed to pick up new passengers abroad, with the exception of Belgium and Luxembourg. The blue license plate cannot always be recognized as coming from the EU. It is recommended to carry an NL sticker abroad. The RDW Center for Vehicle Technology and Information has prepared a statement in English, French, German and Dutch that can be shown to police and customs as if it were a "cab passport.
