Van insurance including or excluding VAT?
When taking out a van insurance policy, the insurer assumes the new value of the car. Is it smart to insure your van including or excluding VAT? What is the difference?
In most cases, an entrepreneur can deduct VAT on business expenses. This also applies to a van. It is therefore smart to insure your van excluding VAT. This is because you can reclaim the VAT from the tax authorities. When you insure your van excluding VAT, it means that the insured amount is lower and the premium will be cheaper as well.
Value of accessories van
It is also good to pay attention to the value of any accessories when buying van insurance. An insurer distinguishes between parts that are standard in the car and accessories that you have installed in the van. All accessories that are not built into the car as standard are not co-insured and you must insure them separately.
BPM van
BPM is an abbreviation of Tax on Passenger Cars and Motorcycles. A car is only put on the license plate (registered) when the BPM return has been filed and the BPM has been paid. If you are not an entrepreneur or do not comply with the entrepreneur scheme, you must declare and pay the BPM for a delivery van within one month after registration. During this month you may drive it on public roads. You only pay BPM for a delivery van if it was put into use for the first time on or after July 1, 2005, and you are not an entrepreneur or do not comply with the entrepreneur scheme.
Claims payment excluding VAT
If you choose to insure your van without VAT, then you should also take this into account in case of damage. This is because in that case, a claim payment will also be made without the 21% tax.
If you have a damage of €10,000, the damage payment will be without 21% VAT, namely €7,900.
On re-purchase after damage, you can reclaim the VAT from the Tax Office.
For WA van insurance, the value of the van is less important. With this insurance the damage to your own van is not compensated, only the damage caused by the van to others. With WA Limited Comprehensive and all-risk van insurance, the value of the vehicle does play a role. With all-risk insurance, the insurer also pays for the damage to your own car in case of an accident. A WA limited casco insurance does not pay out the damage to your van after an accident, but it does pay out damage caused by a collision with stray animals, broken windows and theft of the van.
Also pay close attention to the accessories that come standard with the vehicle and any that you may have had installed (later). The right amount insured on your van insurance policy can make a big difference in the event of a claim.
