What does WA van insurance cover?

The owner of a van has an obligation to provide insurance. This is third-party liability insurance. Abbreviated, it is called WA. There are three forms of insurance that you can choose between, WA being the cheapest. In case of an accident caused by the fault of the driver of your van, the insurer takes care of compensating the other party for damages. Damage to your van must be paid for by yourself. If the other party is liable for the damage, you can recover damages from the other party's insurer.

Does it matter who is the driver of the van?

No, people other than the owner may also drive the van. Of course, the driver must have a valid driver's license, but that makes sense. It becomes a different story if someone other than the owner is the regular driver of the van. This must be communicated to the insurer. This may in fact cause an adjustment in the premium. In that case, the premium for the van insurance will also depend on the claim-free years accrued by the regular driver.

When to choose WA van insurance?

Third-party insurance is often chosen for older vans. Where the limit lies differs per car and also depends, for example, on mileage and state of repair. If a van is only worth €1,000, it is no longer worth opting for the all-risks insurance. This is because the premium is too high in relation to the coverage you get. You're not going to pay €400 a year in premium for all risks van insurance if the vehicle itself is only worth €1,000.

What is the risk of having only third-party insurance?

In an accident caused by the driver's fault, the damage to the van's own vehicle is not compensated by the insurer. This is also the case with the WA + limited casco. Only the all risk van insurance provides coverage against this damage. By choosing the more extensive WA + limited casco you do have coverage against damage due to theft, broken windows and fire damage, for example. The premium for this insurance is often only slightly higher than for the WA van insurance.
